5 Strength Moves Every Woman Over 40 Should Be Training Now

Because what you build in your 40s and 50s can help determine how confidently you move through your 60s, 70s and beyond.

I am not asking you to squat, lunge and lift heavier just to burn more calories.

I am thinking about the woman you want to be 10, 20 and 30 years from now.

When many women think about exercise after 40, the conversation immediately goes to weight loss.

How do I lose belly fat? How do I get my old body back? How many calories did I burn? Should I do more cardio?

Those questions are understandable.

But I want us thinking bigger.

Can you get yourself off the floor?

Can you carry heavy groceries into the house?

Can you climb stairs without thinking twice?

Can you travel, hike, play with your kids or grandkids, move furniture, lift luggage and trust your body to handle life?

That is what strength training is really preparing us for.

The TWC Mindset
You are not just training for today. You are training for your future.

Why Strength After 40 Matters

As we move through our 40s, 50s and beyond, maintaining muscle and strength becomes increasingly important.

Strength training provides a reason for your body to keep adapting. It challenges your muscles, supports your ability to produce force, places useful load through your body and helps you continue practicing the movement patterns everyday life requires.

This is especially important for women because the goal should not simply be to weigh less.

The goal is to remain capable.

That is why I created the TWC Strong for Life 5.

These are not fancy exercises.

They are five foundational movements that train your body to do things you will need for the rest of your life.

Strong for Life Move #1

The Goblet Squat

Life skill: Get up strong.

Think about how many times you sit down and stand back up every day.

A chair. A couch. A toilet. Your car. The floor. A bench.

Squatting helps train the legs and hips to produce the strength required for those everyday movements.

TWC Coaching Cues:Keep your whole foot connected to the floor.
Sit between your hips.
Keep control on the way down.
Drive through the floor to stand tall.

Start here: Box squat
Build to: Goblet squat
Challenge yourself: Heavier goblet squat or front squat

Strong for Life Move #2

Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift

Life skill: Pick things up strong.

We bend over constantly.

Laundry baskets. Grocery bags. Boxes. Pets. Gardening. Luggage. Things we drop on the floor.

The Romanian deadlift teaches you how to hinge through your hips while strengthening your glutes, hamstrings and posterior chain.

TWC Coaching Cues:Push your hips backward.
Keep the dumbbells close to your legs.
Maintain a strong, long spine.
Stand by driving your hips forward and squeezing your glutes.

Start here: Elevated hip hinge
Build to: Dumbbell RDL
Challenge yourself: Heavy RDL or single-leg RDL

Strong for Life Move #3

Reverse Lunge

Life skill: Stay strong and stable on one leg.

Life rarely happens with your feet perfectly even.

We step over things, change direction, walk on uneven surfaces, climb curbs and catch ourselves when we lose our balance.

Lunges give us an opportunity to train each leg independently while challenging strength, stability, coordination and control.

TWC Coaching Cues:Step backward with control.
Keep the front foot planted.
Stay tall through your torso.
Push through the front leg to return.

Start here: Supported split squat
Build to: Reverse lunge
Challenge yourself: Weighted reverse lunge to knee drive

Strong for Life Move #4

Dumbbell Step-Up

Life skill: Climb strong.

Stairs are one of those everyday things we barely notice until they become difficult.

Step-ups train your ability to generate force through one leg while maintaining control and balance.

This is functional strength in its simplest form.

TWC Coaching Cues:Get your whole foot onto the step.
Drive through the working leg.
Avoid launching yourself from the bottom foot.
Stand tall before stepping back down.

Start here: Low supported step-up
Build to: Dumbbell step-up
Challenge yourself: Heavy step-up or step-up to knee drive

Strong for Life Move #5

Calf Raise

Life skill: Walk, balance and move strong.

Calves do much more than make the lower leg look strong.

Your lower legs and ankles contribute to walking, pushing off the ground, navigating stairs and maintaining control as you move.

Calf raises are simple, but they deserve a place in a complete strength program.

TWC Coaching Cues:Rise through the ball of your foot.
Get as tall as you comfortably can.
Pause at the top.
Lower slowly instead of bouncing.

Start here: Supported two-leg calf raise
Build to: Weighted calf raise
Challenge yourself: Single-leg weighted calf raise

Here Is What I Really Want Women Over 40 to Understand

You do not have to become a powerlifter.

You do not have to train for hours.

You do not have to lift the heaviest weight in the room.

But you do need to give your body a reason to stay strong.

And as you get stronger, the weights that once challenged you should not remain the weights you use forever.

At TWC, progression matters.

Sometimes progression means more weight.

Sometimes it means better control.

Sometimes it means a deeper range of motion, slower tempo, better balance or owning a movement you once struggled to perform.

The goal is not simply to survive the workout.

We do not progress because you finished the reps.We progress when you own the movement.

Your Body Is Not Expiring

Turning 40 does not mean your strongest years automatically belong behind you.

This stage of life can actually be the moment you become more intentional about your strength than ever before.

Maybe your reason for training used to be fitting into a certain pair of jeans.

Now your reason can become bigger.

You want energy.

You want confidence.

You want muscle.

You want to feel strong carrying your own suitcase.

You want to get down on the floor and know you can get back up.

You want to keep saying YES when life gives you an opportunity to move.

That is Strong for Life.

The TWC Strong for Life Check

Ask yourself:

01. Can I squat to a chair and stand confidently?
02. Can I hinge and pick something up with control?
03. Can I control my body on one leg?
04. Can I step onto an elevated surface strongly?
05. Can I rise onto my toes and lower with control?

If one of those feels difficult today, that does not mean you avoid it.
It gives us something meaningful to train.

Strong at 40.
Stronger at 50.
Capable at 60.
Independent at 70+.
