Stop Blaming Genetics for Your Calves
Build stronger calves through smarter training—not luck.
Coach Amy’s Corner
One of the most common things I hear from clients is:
“Coach Amy…I just wasn’t born with good calves.”
Here’s the truth.
Yes, genetics influence the shape of your calf muscles—but they don’t determine how strong they become.
After coaching people for more than 15 years, I’ve found that most people simply aren’t training their calves correctly.
Let’s fix that.

Myth vs Reality
❌ Myth
“My calves are small because of genetics.”
✅ Reality
Genetics influence muscle shape and insertion points, but your training determines how much of your potential you actually develop.
Mistake #1
Treating Calves Like an Afterthought
Most people save calf raises until the very end of leg day.
By then…
✔ You’re tired.
✔ Your form breaks down.
✔ Your range of motion becomes shorter.
✔ You rush every repetition.
If calf growth matters to you, train them with the same intention you train squats and deadlifts.
Mistake #2
Using Half Reps
One of the biggest muscle-building secrets is spending time in the stretched position.
Instead of bouncing:
- Lower slowly
- Feel the stretch
- Pause briefly
- Drive through the ball of your foot
- Squeeze hard at the top
TWC Coach Tip
Slow down before adding more weight.
Three perfect repetitions are more valuable than ten rushed ones.
Mistake #3
Only Training One Variation
Your calves contain two major muscles.
Standing Calf Raises
Primarily target the Gastrocnemius.
Bent Knee or Seated Calf Raises
Place greater emphasis on the Soleus.
Train both.
Develop both.
Grow both.
The TWC Calf Builder

Coach Amy’s Challenge
For the next 30 days…
- Train calves twice every week.
- Use a full range of motion.
- Pause at the top.
- Track your progress.
Small improvements become big results.
“Your genetics may write the first chapter, but your consistency determines the ending.”
